Hey I was wondering if anyone has had any trouble getting used to the clutch? Let me first start by saying I just bought the S4 and it is my first time driving stick in about 4 years. I am just wondering if someone could refresh my memory on how the gears should feel. Especially 3rd gear. Should the gears shift like butter or do you actually feel the gear changes? I know it may be a difficult question to answer, but just looking for some tips in shifting as well? RPMs? Thanks

A4 shifter is a lot smother, more "like butter" feel you mentioned. One thing wrong with A4 is the clutch engagement point is high at approx 75% travel, while S4 is normal more like 25%. Unfortunately I got used to the stupid A4 clutch.
Back to the shifter. The S4 6 speed has a notchy feel compared to other shifters. Although it is all relative and there is a specific adjustment procedure. If improperly adjusted the notchiness will be much more pronounced. Did you buy the car new or used? Take it to the dealer or compare to other S4s. If you want I can try to dig up the adjustment procedure.
Now for short shifter and DTS. Both are great mods but you should know what they will get you before shelling out $500. The short shifter will reduce the travel by up to 50%, but it will not make it feel smoother. In fact because of the same effort over a shorter throw it may feel even notchier. DTS and or snub mount will help reduce movement in the transmission and the "rubber banding" effect under *aggressive* shifting. It may not do nearly as much for the feel under normal or "granny shifting".

I bought it used <15k miles. Clutch seems nice and tight, just seems like third gear has a slight click feeling, as if it is hitting something before it engages. I must say it doesn't happen all the time. I have been making sure i push the clutch all the way down. I would appreciate it if you can find info on adjustments.

2000 S4. It's closer to the top (like 75%). 33K miles, third owner. Never launched by me yet, but did get a whiff once when I didn't side step on a higher rev 1st gear engagement.
Also test drove another 2000 model with 9K miles on it and it also engaged toward the top. Just thought that was where they are.
Is my clutch on the way out?
