Clutch issues -- pressure plate replacement?
Since the first month I've had my car, the clutch has done this weird popping and binding thing when letting it out from first gear. Basically, as I let the clutch out (slow, fast, no gas, little gas, whatever) the clutch will feel like it's binding a bit, get a little tougher to release, and then just pop out somewhere along the travel. The location of this changes, sometimes it's in the first 10% of travel, sometimes in the middle, sometimes at the end. The longer I've had the car, the more noticible it has become. I've even started to feel it sometimes in 2nd gear, though never in 4th or higher.
2 weeks ago, I brought my car in for it's 24K service. The service manager went out for a drive with me, and of course, the car was fine. I even drove it and it my car felt fine! I asked them to let it sit and drive it around before they returned it to me. Sure enough, they did as I asked and felt the pop! Anyway, the manager (Peter Smith @ Anderson Behel) called up the "audi tech hotline" and reported back that they need to "put in a pressure plate". I assume he means he'll be replacing my pressure plate. I just wanted to run this by the board, see if anyone else has had anything similar. Does this make sense?
thanks,
Oren

People talk about a "helper spring" that can bind and/or break. May want to check this.
This is located under the steering column down by the clutch pedal. I had the same problem, but it went away, never to return.

That's my clutch!
I have about 7600 miles on my '01 S4. You've described my clutch exactly. My problem has been happening since 1000 miles or so, but has gotten much worse over the last few months.
Service couldn't find it the first time, but I will have them take another look now that I know exactly how to reproduce it.
