I've seen a number of US brands have models go over 100/100... and keep in mind these are generally numbers of reported problems, which can be very minor. My first S4, off the lot, had five or six minor problems it went back into the shop to get fixed. Stuff like rattles, or the ashtray being stuck.

except his version of the story was 42 breakdowns. I told him I don't thinks so, that most of those are not major issues, infact most of them are probably the stupid fuel gauge issue the A6 has. Clearly this story does not say 42 breakdowns. But it can give the wrong impression none the less, and certainly bad press for Audi!

...it has done better. I don't think the S4 has been given a reliability rating; not enough feedback to make it statistically valid.

their data is skewed for a couple of reasons. Everyone knows that person who thinks their Camry or Lexus or Honda is the greatest car in the world and even though it has been to the shop a dozen times; they'll swear it is the most reliable car EVER. This translates to people believe what they want to believe. If you drive an economy car or a "prestige" brand, you believe it never breaks down because if it breaks down you have to admit it costs $ to repair or that it isn't the best car you could have bought (and you bought it especially to impress the neighbors, not to impress yourself whle driving it).
Has there ever been a performance car worth driving that CR gives a recommended rating? I don't think so. CR equates cars and washing machines; I can't get too passionate about a washing machine...
Also if you drive something like an S4, you drive it harder than 95% of the population drives their cars, the cars are designed to push the limit, they are much more complex, and when it breaks you just suck it up and say what the hell and get it fixed. You don't lie to yourself about it later when someone asks; its just part of the price you pay to own cutting edge technology in a vehicle.
OK, rant is over!
