My check engine light came on and I took it to a private mechanic who has a diagnostic system for our cars, the codes read misfires on cyl. 2-4-6.
He said that I needed to replace three of my coil packs. Since he reset my fault codes the check engine light hasn't come back on (yet), What do you guys think? Go ahead and replace them now or just a keep an eye on them for now and see if the check engine light comes on again. The car doesn't seem down on power which I thought was a symptom of bad coil packs.
I trust the guy, he's been honest with me in the past, and he has reset other fault codes with out charging me a dime. 70-80% of the cars he works on are Audi/Volkswaagen.

Are they old? I would pull the plugs first and check them out. I find it hard to beleive that three coil packs would go at the same time. Before you have them replaced, see if you get the codes again.

Cylinder misfires are a pretty common occurrence on this engine. The bad coilpacks seem to be confined mostly to A4 engines, not S4 engines. If he reset the codes and they didn't come back, IMO you're fine.
BTW, you'd be advised to buy your own VAG software and cable, and then STFA for particular codes to see whether something is important or not. Might save you a trip to the mechanic and might allow you to fix some things yourself.

I don't think he's worked on more than 2-3 s4's.
I'll throw in some fresh plugs, I've got around 30k on the current set, And yes, the Vag is on my short list of things to get.
Thanks again.

you could still be getting misfires though not know it. I'd get your hands on a VAG-COM tool and take a look at live misfires (blocks 015 and 016). I haven't heard of coilpack issues in the S4...but misfire issues are common. Usually plugs or vacuum leaks or injectors or fuel, etc. Cyl #5 is the infamous loudmouth.
