My S4 has 17k miles on it and I am going on a road trip at the end of this week, so I though I do an early tune up on the car. Since Mike Staley did such a nice write up on the fuel filter change and recommends it every 15k miles, I added it to my to do list.
The Fuel filter replacement was a pain! First off, let me recommend doing this with a lift. I can't imagine what a pain it would be without a lift. Second, make sure you have the exact tools that are pictured in the write-up. Third, taking the bolts that attach fuel lines off can be quite
challenging because the filter turns as you put some torque on it to get it loose. I finally used an air wrench, and that took off alright, and sprayed gas all over me just as Mike had warned. Last but not least, putting the 4 bolts that attach the fuel tank straps to the vehicle can be quite challenging. It seemed like the bolts where much harder to turn to put back on. It helped to push up the gas tank and then tighten the bolts.
Now to how plugged the Fuel filter was. To my surprize the filter was not plugged at all. It was a littile harder to blow through but not much. Once the fuel dried out of it, you could hardly tell a difference between the new and the old. I don't know why my filter is not plugged, when some have said their filter was plugged with only 6k miles. I have been using toluene for the last 8k miles and that may very well be the reason. In any case, it really did not have to be replaced.
As for the air filter, the tech article for it was very helpful as well. As you will notice, doing just about anything with this car is PIA because of limited room available. It was hard positioning the lid to the air box to provide enough room to yank out the filter. I would definately recommend changing the filter every 15k miles especially if you live in an area where that is dry and lots of blowing dust.
Hope this helps<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/722730.phtml">S4 fuel filter replacement</a></li></ul>
