many people call audi a rich man's VW, in many cases i can agree (A4) but not with the S4.
when i hear that comment from a VW i just call their car a poor mans audi.

I can see the V8 going in there but supercharging it is out of the question
If anything is getting a newly designed supercharged 4.3 it's going to be that ugly *** convertible they have

I used to think that.
When we first bought my wife's Passat and I had first seen the S4 Avant I thought to myself, "that's just a posh VW Passat". Then I bought my S4.

It wouldn't surprise me if this "S4 killer" was an automatic only. Hell, I'm still bitter than Audi's A6 4.2 is auto only! I drove that car at Nazareth...it's a crying shame that they didn't build it with a manual!

Pretty much.
It's always remarkable to me just how similar my brother's 2001 GTI is to my S4 Avant. Of course, the Golf and the A3 share the same platform.
