Could a broken/damaged ECT cause bad gas mileage?...

I've only been getting about 200 mi before the light comes on and I don't push my car too hard, not always that is.

All jokes aside I would say that my gas mileage did improve by at least 10mpg after the CTS change but mine was terrible when I changed it.

O2 sensors, and EGT sensors could also be suspect, but they are a LOT more than the CTS, and harder to replace.
Replace the CTS first...if that doesn't fix the issue, then worry about what's next.
