Default Could someone please explain exactly what a "floating" rotor is?

From what I understand, only 2 piece rotors are available for our cars, and none of them float, but I have seen a million posts here refering to floating rotors.

Default sure...

floating rotors have a center hub (the hat), and a outer disc (the rotor, where the caliper clamps). they are connected by a series of small loosely fitted bolts. the design is such so that then the rotor heats with use, the rotor will expand radially, and independently of the hat.

so thats what they do and how they do it.

why do they do it? i don't know entirely. i'm guessing it has to do with stress relief and trying to keep heat away from the wheel hub and wheel bearing.

more info

Why they do it: Mainly to prevent warping from rapid expansion/contraction of the rotor.
