Cruise control problem

Is there a way, other than by driving or pulling stuff apart, to test and see if the cruise control is broken? I ask because, when I press the cruise control button, it doesn't seem to control my cruise...
I was thinking something along the lines of hooking up the VAG and seeing some number change when I press "set" or whatever...

If it is something along the lins of "clutch pedal switch-Implasable signal" it is probably that switch is bad or mis-adjusted. It's a plunger type switch that senses when the clutch pedal is out/fully engaged. IF it is adjusted incorrectly it will read as if the clutch is depressed when it is infact fully engaged. Hence disabling cruise control.
If you take off the drivers side kick panel, you can see both a brake pedal and clutch pedal switch. It will make alot more sense when you visually see what it is trying to do.
Mine looked like tit was just pushed back over time. I screwed ti back in an dI had cruise for the first time since havingmy car. Needless to say I was happy.
