Update: I replaced the POS (Power Output Stage) from PureEMS...no more miss, no more codes.

The Beru replacement is not an exact dimensional duplicate of the OE Bosch, and it was interfering with the other one. I had to use a hand file to trim the base of it and the OE one slightly to make them fit. Do it slowly, fit and re-fit. Last thing you want to do is cut too much! But, once fitted, it works perfectly (yes, I tested it BEFORE I modified it, though being an electrical part it was likely not refundable anyway...)

And, for reference, if you're getting code PO304 cylinder 4 misfire, then replace the one with the brown connectors; if you're getting code PO301 cylinder 1 misfire, then replace the one with the black connectors. And make sure you use the goop it comes with and clean off the base well so it gets a good tight fit to the airbox; that's what keeps it from overheating (just like the fan base on a PC CPU).

Cheers!

Or just replace both of those little Bosch POSs. More hand filing though. What is interesting is the difference in reliability of the Hitachi ICM unit on 2.8l 12V V6s ( 200,000 plus mile life with almost no failures) which is mounted off the engine on the dash panel versus the Bosch airbox mounted units on 1.8l and 2.7l turbos. The Bosch units fail at very low miles (my wife's A4 went out at 43,000 miles) and often. Is it the heat from the turbo and the location of the Bosch unit or a weak Bosch design that gives such poor service life? My guess is that it is the heat at the airbox location. Other manufacturers have had similar problems--Ford engine mounted ignition amplifiers failures which earned the company a place in the record books for the first and maybe only safety recall ordered by the judical system not the DOT.

check the ground wires coming off harness on rear of motor. coil packs have 2 grounds and built in modules, bad ground will cause a bevy of issues intermittent to permanent, they are in a crappy spot, i rewired them all to the same spot on the firewall as the left hand side of motor

Default ICM delete to fix issue permanently?

I have the exact same issue, p0300 and both cyl 3&4 misfire, would the ecs kit to delete both icm work, or should I consider just getting new icms?
