Just be careful. Make sure your car is OFF! Make sure your multimeter is up to date and works properly. Also make sure your terminals are clean along with the grounds and other connections.
Voltage drop from negative terminal to negative ground. Should be <.5v
Voltage drop from positive terminal to positive terminal on starter. Should be <.2v
Open Circuit Voltage test, let the battery stabilize for ten minutes or so, puts your car to sleep basically. Read your battery voltage, one of the POS terminal and one of the NEG terminal.
If you get 12.6 Volts or more=100% State or Charge
Anything lower then 12.2-12.4 Volts your battery might be on its way out <75-50% or may need a charge.
Next Do me a favor and unplug your MAF and make sure its clean. The same thing that your describing happened to both my older brother who has a Stage 3 S4 and was ripping around in Mammoth a couple weekends ago and we had the same thing happen. ABS,CEL,BRAKE, ESP,and no power and my my younger brother who has a stock B5 S4 had the same thing happen when he unplugged his MAF accidentally and started the car. All we did was clean the connector to the MAF and clean the MAF with some electric cleaner and it fixed the problem on the Stage 3. the first few times your turn on the car it will still show all the lights, let your car idle for about 2-3 mins and restart, unless you have a VAG.
What worries me is the 18 volts your reading..
Good Luck and keep us posted.
