Dead battery or dead alternator?
For awhile my car would be at around 12v after sitting locked for a period of time. It would take a bit longer to start sometimes, but nothing excessive. Once the car was on it would read closer to 16v, as expected.
I got the car back from the dealer today. Drove it the 2miles home. No problem.
Left it locked for around 14 hours. Went and started it. Turned over with 12 volts, then the voltmeter continued to drop while the car was on. It kept going until the lights began to flicker and the ABS/ESP lights came on, at which point I just turned it off...pissed.
What's the deal?

Sounds like bad voltage regulator to me. If it was battery, it should run OK even if battery won't
hold a charge - unless the battery has failed due to an internal short. Hard to correctly diagnose from your post.

Most likely your battery is faulty. Easy way to tell: get a replacement at
Sears and if it doesn't solve the problem you can always take it back for a full refund.
A faulty battery can show all sorts of strange behaviour, including not being able to hold a charge with the car running. I know this from personal experience.

Get the car started and they can test everything
I use autozone for everything and they can wheel out their little tester and test the alt and battery. I had to replace my battery a few months ago.
