I'm going to end up flying somewhere to pick one up, so it will be tough to turn it down. I searched and didn't find anything. If the guy tells you it's perfect and nothing is wrong, then what would make you say "nope...i'm outta here?"
I've read up on how the timing belt needs to be done at 90k, MAF and O2 sensors often go bad, the obvious turbo drill noise. But what about the tranny, brakes, suspension, interior?
And is anyone looking to part ways with a none modded 6sp avant

I'm not saying it's a bad guide, but it says don't buy it if it's smoking and sputtering. I read these forums daily and have realized there are certain problem areas s4's have, just like any other car. I've never owned one so i just go buy this forum. I've got money in hand and am just waiting for the right one to come up. I plan on having this car for a long time and don't want to buy something and have it break and cost me thousands because I missed a tell-tail sign. I was hoping someone had advice like "if it shifts hard in 3rd under medium throttle, then tranny is shot" or something like that. Most people here are incredibly smart and know this car inside and out. I'm a jet engine mechanic in the National Guard, so I'm pretty observant, but I also know that it's easy to miss something if you don't know what you are looking for. Someone posted a link to a post about problem areas on this car and that was incredibly helpful. I'm have been drooling over this car for the last 6 years and needed to wait until college and deployments were over. I've waited so long I feel like I am going to miss something and buy a car destined to be problems. If there is another forum or post someone can point me to, I would be really greatful.

If you buy one, it WILL cost you a lot of money and it will break your heart, especially if you want to drive it hard.
Sure, there are owners on here with 195k miles, but that's pretty rare and no without it's share of risk vs. reward!
Best wishes,
Ram

around 70k or so i had to :
-TREs, control arms
- guage cluster
- cam seals, valve cover gaskets
- aux water pump
- wheel bearings
that could be a start for a "basic" laundry list of things that "often" need to be done around 60k+
personally, i'd rather get a nice S4 with 70k + which has had a lot of these "frequent" issues taken care of
good luck

advice I can give is to have the car inspected by a good tech who knows the car before you buy. The car will cost you thousands more down the line regardless but this can help your negotiations and tell you what needs your attention first.

sign"
this car isn't for you, then.
a car could be in perfect shape and still cost thousands of dollars in repair costs and never had an issue until that day.
walk away now.
