is distilled water necessary for replacing the coolant?

never use tap water when mixing coolant....
there are salts and minerals in tap water that can rust and corrod your cooling system. Alway get distilled water, its only 1 a gallon.

IMO, it depends on where you live. The container clearly states that it requires soft water...
OR distalled water. While distalled water is better and should be used if you can, but if you live in an area that has soft water as your tap water and for whatever reason, do not have distalled water handy, then you are okay too.
Plus, I highly doubt that dealerships or independent shops are all using bottled distilled water when it comes to replacing coolants.

not true
distilled water is water without any minerals, just plain H2O. By leaving drinking water open is not going to get rid of its minerals.
To make distilled water you need to boil the water into steam then from the steam you make water again in a clean container.
