here's what the California DMV site says:
"Every accident reported to DMV by law enforcement will show on your driving record unless the reporting officer says another person was at fault. Every accident reported by you, or another party in the accident, will show on your record if any one person has over $500 in damage or if anyone is injured or dies. It does not matter who caused the accident. The law says DMV must keep this record. "
and here is my dealio:
someone did a hit and run on my S4. the damage was over $500 to my car, so one would normally file a report to the DMV. But that goes on my record....even though I was not at fault (thus potentially affecting my insurance rate). I've filed a police report, and the reporting officer stated it was the fault of the other (unknown) party. So presumably it has been reported to the DMV via the police department. Should/do I file the DMV report at this point?

You pay your deductable, but your rates are NOT affected.
This is what happened when I rear-ended someone when they screeched to a halt due to some numbskull stopping on an on-ramp. The person who stopped just took off... no damage to the minivan... so I just paid my deductable and they fixed my car and all was good (no rate increase)
This is with AAA... so your milage may vary, of course![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

I have had a couple incidents here in CO vs CA. Insurance Co (State Farm) asked if I filed a police report. I said no. Took the car to the body shop, and they did the rest of the interaction with the insurance company for me, and all I paid was the deductible (no insurance rate change).
