Does SEL do the "exact" same thing as a boost controller?

Actual boost won't change if you adjust SEL scaling while running MBC only.
That's why some people play with SEL scaling to eliminate negative deviation code when running XR+MBC only+TCD homebrew setup. Actual boost stays the same, but the requested curve changes. They try to fit the requested curve to the TCD's clamped setting better. With that said, I don't recommend trying this as you may induce TC up top due to positive boost deviation...just using this as an example of SEL changing and actual staying the same.

Is the only reason people don't use MBC in parallel w/ fueling setups...
is for the quicker boost response? ie less lag?
I very much like the smooth ramp of the parallel setup and would be curious to see if it was the same when fueling is involved.
Would FATS or 60' times be slower w/ a parallel setup?

Many say ramp up is better and taper is less. I have nothing to prove this, but love MBC only.
The drivability is great for my driving style. Others have complained about it in the past, but my car is butter smooth.
