Default doing rear rotors/pads without the special tool

I just posted a how-to on the brake forum for retracting the rear caliper pistons without the expensive and not-available-locally special tool. The only non-standard tool required is one of those cheap piston retracting cubes available at Pep Boys or wherever.

Default I don't consider $40 to be an expensive tool. But it is always good to have low tech....

option

ditto - I hate that little cube thing - I'd wait to do the job to get the better tool.

No, the special tool consists of a plate and concentric shafts, one for pushing the piston, one for turning it. Costs something like $60-$120, has to be ordered, can't drive out on a Sunday and pick one up.

3rd. And if you try to use pliers, you chew up the dust boot. Buy/rent the tool.

Default I bought mine for $35 from Autozone - call around to some places that rent tools.......

You might find one.

The tool I bought was one I rented from Autozone. It was new in the package when I "rented" it. I called after using it and asked if I could just keep it since it was soooo much better than the little cube.

Anyway, they kept my deposit of $35 and that was it.<ul><li><a href="http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=40732">http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=40732</a</li></ul>
