Hmm. I think there are at least two temp sensors for the coolant, if not more. I can't recall which one reads to the instrument cluster though. Maybe you've got some bad wiring causing a short?

Are you having noticable symptoms or is it just the check engine light?
I'm getting 17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System (check Temp-Sensor and Thermostat) on VAG and I get HORRIBLE fuel economy right now (15MPG avg according to Fuelly). I don't blame it on the cooling system but I could see the implications of the cooling system causing the car to really guzzle gas before warming up. I'm ordering a new coolant sensor just to be sure.
Is the gauge completely dead or does it take a long time to warm up??

Try pulling the temp readings via the HVAC system. What is your exact model and year? Temp sensor G2/G62 and F18/F54 are on the Right(passenger) side on the rear water pipe. Are you sure you changed the correct one? What is the temp of the air at the dash vents? Should be 120-140 degree if the car is at full temp. G2 turns off AC at 120F and G42 at 116F reduces Air Charge Pressure.
