The dealer has told me that it will be around $450. Is it a big deal if I just use any old windshield place or is the OEM Audi the way to go. TIA!

Too expensive for OE.
I paid $236 for an OE windshield directly from a dealer parts counter.
My replacement OE windshield is doing fine. Others here have had worse luck, recommend PPG.

that was for part and labor - also called a local glass place...
They told me that is would be cheaper to just do it at the dealer because they don't have aftermarket glass for the '01 S4 and they would just have to go to the dealer and buy it straight from the parts counter, then mark it up to me. I thought there would be a local windshield place that could put non-Audi glass in for me.

SGC is Safelite Glass?
I'm having that installed today for the passenger side front door for the Jetta.
I tried to find PPG in my area and on PPG's website, I could not find a distributor. No luck in the yellow pages either. :-(
What was wrong with Safelite, if indeed that's what you meant by SGC.

Safelite installed it. I don't know what the SGC stood for.
The optical distortion was horrific with that windshield. It was like looking through prescription eyeglasses at a 45 degree angle all the time.
