Default Are ECU's Interchangable

I want to get a spare ECU and have it chipped. Do I need the same part#?
I have a 551B? Forum members have offered me ECU's with different part#'s claiming that they were interchangable and I am sceptical.

As long as you get it chipped with the software designed for your car yes. You may need to change the coding on the ECU to make it work right on your car.

So a chipped ECU for a B5 S4 manual can be used for a B5 S4 Tip? How does one change the coding??
