ECUx skipping data....

I STFA's and came up blank on this issue.
Trying to get ECUx going recently. Running VAG HEX-CAN USB cable. Loaded the most recent drivers for the cable and it picked up and worked perfectly....or so I thought.
It seems to work fine when you log but once over it has large gaps in the data. It logs for about 5-15 seconds and then skips everything for about 5-15 seconds. There's no data or time stamps or nothing. The graph shows a gap as does the big skip in the data.
I've tried switching the caching modes, baud rates, resolution. No change. Always skips data at about the same intervals. Anyone seen this before?
I'm pulling my hair out. I thought I was set once I was able to get it logging....guess not.

check your power settings. Go into device manager and make sure that you aren't allowing the computer to turn off the USB port or the VAG-COM cable driver to save power.
When I switched from "power saver" to "balanced", it fixed the issue. This was under Vista, but the same should apply regardless of OS.

...I thought you had it. I was sure you did. Well, it didn't fix it but it helped!!
Reset the hubs so the power wouldn't be shut off. No change. Went ahead and started messing with settings again.
If I dropped the baud rate way down I could log for about 30 seconds and skip 10 seconds. Drop a few variables and I could get 40 and 10. Drop a bunch and I can "sometimes" not skip.
So it's sort of working...sometimes. At least enough I can log. Thanks!

Maybe try plugging the laptop into AC power, and see if it is any energy saving feature at all. Also, vista can monopolize the I/O by thrashing the hard disk of laptops while updating the search index. I disable super fetch and indexing services on any Vista machine, especially laptops, unless I specifically need the services, and have lots of hard disk speed and spare CPU power. Laptops seldom have this. Especially on battery power. If you are running Vista, update to Service Pack 1. Some Power and other fixes are in there. If you are at SP 1, see what hard disk activity you have during these gap periods.

Car was plugged into AC power. Always do when logging (or trying to log). I'm running XP.
It's too repeatable to be hard disk activity, IMHO. Changing the baud rates changes the gap interval but it is still a repeatable gap.
I'm going to try different VAG drivers when I log tomorrow and see if that helps. Thanks.
