See story begins in the link at the bottom of this post...
Latest... I replaced the oil pump and went back to the track on Saturday. I'd rather start with the oil pump before tearing into the top of the engine. I did find a nice 6" strip of gasket material at the bottom of the pan. Otherwise the pan looked very clean as did the old pump.
Sooo, my plan was to get the oil temps up then pit and listen for problems. At first I went out for a few laps and got the oil temp up to 240 degrees. I pulled into the pits and the car sounded fine. Cool, maybe the problem was fixed. Ha! I go back out for a couple more laps and reach 250 degrees... pit, and the she's making the knocking/sewing machine noise again. So much for the pump being the cause. For some reason 250 degrees is the magic number. Anything cooler and the car sounds fine.
Nevertheless, I did seem to get a better idea of where the sound is coming from. It's still making noise at the front of the motor but this time it was easier to hear knocking from the entire driver's side cylinder bank. Especially the front of the bank which might seem to indicate a problem with the cam tensioner/seals... right? BTW, I don't see any signs of an oil leak in that area.
Additional info: No warning lights, no error codes, and I'm waiting on an oil analysis.

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/2720272.phtml</a
