without actual transmission and/or differential
specifications, there is NO guarantee the
transmission and/or differentials can handle
the extra power.
in addition...
there is the simple $$$ factor.
It isn't just $6,000 for any K04 kit... anyone
that seriously thinks it's only $6,000 to
run an S4 at 400hp+ is uneducated in this scope.
My personal feeling is that more is required
to run the kit.
Here's what I think you would need:
1) K04 kit....... $6,000
2) RS4 intercoolers..... $500?
3) Aftermarket Downpipes..... about $1,500
4) Aftermarkte Catback....... about $1,000
5) Aftermarket Clutch........ about $1,000?
*including pressure plate + flywheel*
6) Aftermarket Suspension.... about $1,200
7) Aftermarket Brakes........ about $2,000
now, here's some more to ponder: recommended
8) APR snub mount... $50
9) AWE DTS.......... $350
10) Shortshifter.... $250?
11) Boost gauge..... $100?
12) Better tires.... $800?
we're already talking $14,750 in mods... and
that's without installation costs. I'd say
another $3k in installation costs if you
know your mechanic reallllly well. so you're
at like $17,750 in mods alone... and this
list is without ecodes, a bodykit, stereo mods,
etc... this list doesn't include many mods
that a lot of S4 owners have done.
Add to that the insecurity of having a car
that cannot be warrantied... and I have yet
to see some information that tells me
we have the same differentials/engine internals OR
tranny as an RS4. If we do, I'd appreciate it
if someone would prove it beyond any doubt.
Oh, add to all of this crap the simple fact that
I have no faith in ANY tuner getting the programming
perfect on the first, second, or even third
try. So, you got a nice, fast sports sedan that
gives you headaches and keeps you wondering
when something is going to break. Not IF, but
WHEN.
Also consider, most of us paid about $40k for
our cars... so you'd have to REALLLLLLY love
the S4 to want it over other cars out there that
are in the $60k price range, cause that's the
range you'll be in when you've got the right
K04'd S4... but that's my humble opinion.
The way I figure it, what's the point of having
a K04 kit without being able to drive the car
hard from time to time, which is why I added
the other mods that tuners are leaving out
of their kits and not even putting on a
"recommended" list.
