Has anyone ever done, or do you know somebody, who has tested exhaust systems?
What dB levels are recorded? How was the tests conducted?
I am trying to find a dB level that is illegal or is the industry standard.
Thanks.

...I only tried to make them louder and louder and deeper and deeper sounding. The loudest a dual 2.25" straight pipe set-up that was as loud as a loud Harley.
That's about all I can help you with. :-P

Data from other states pending. :-P

Exhaust Noise Testing
Most exhaust noise tests specifications are generally based upon the "SAE J1169 Measurement of Light Vehicle Exhaust Sound Level under Stationary Conditions"
For example, California and various other states in the US mandate J1169 SAE stationary noise tests.
The upper value limit is 95dB
The test involves positioning a type 1, SIA compliant ANSI S1.4 - 1983 noise level meter, specifically as illustrated in the diagram below. No other positioning is relevant and the noise tests are extremely specific in their scope and must be conducted in accordance with the specification.
Engine RPM must be held steady at 75% of rated peak horsepower RPM and sound levels logged at that rpm.
Example: if your vehicle makes max power at 6,000 rpm then 6,000 x 0.75 = 4,500 is RPM tests are taken at.
