My condolences to his family and friends.
I plan to start attending road course events in addition to my local autocross and will look into fitting the S4 with a harness and neck support options. I'm also going to recommend this to others that I know who are much more serious about this than I am.
Thanks for sharing, Todd.

I've attended three HPDEs to date, and when I talk to people who have never done one, they are always amazed at the speed, but they also think that because it's on a closed course, it's perfectly safe. Fortunately, the group of people that I attend these events with always know that the potential is there for something to go wrong. We've witnessed people going off course and we're aware what can happen if you don't pay 100% attention to what you're doing.
I think in addition to making sure you have safety equipment *that fits*, probably the most important item to have with you is your common sense. Know and admit your limits before you even think about going on the track. Most of the incidents I've heard of have happened because the driver was going beyond their limits.
Todd: What were the track conditions at the time of the accident? Why did the driver go off?

I saw a lot of harnesses at Waterfest that were very poorly mounted... very scary that people don't invest more time and energy into doing things properly. Also, many helmets are ordered through cheap, online stores - leaving the customer to ensure that the helmet fits properly... insane.

i also instruct for several clubs and race....inexpensive, effective head restraint has arrived...the isak device is now available for $295 or pre-intro price of $245...mine is on the way...

I am not an expert regarding safety design or accident reconstruction. I do not wish to make hard conclusions about how this incident occurred or how it may have been prevented.
All I can say is that fatal incidents can occur at Driver Events even with the best clubs and at the mildest speeds.
As a participant in these events, it is ultimately your responsibility to be CONSCIOUS and AWARE of the potential dangers and take appropriate measures to minimize them. Whether that be through better safety equipment or slower driving.
However, do not dismiss these risks or take them casually when participating.
My deepest condolences to Erik's family.
