My GPS antenna affixes to the back window of my Porsche with three large suction cups. Nonetheless, I was able to hit bumps hard enough that it would come flying off. With a hard suspension, the G loads can be quite large.
Anyway, if I understand the idea correctly, this allows you to run without a front plate and then hop out and affix it quickly if a cop is harrassing you. For that it is perfect. If you are going to run with it regularly then obviously you can teather it as you suggest.
By the way, notice my front plate on my Porsche? It is actually not a plate at all but a bumper sticker. I had the image of the plate printed on a bumper sticker and then affixed that. It is smaller than it should be, aerodynamic and not anywhere near as reflective as a real plate. If I had to run a front plate then this is what I would do. I would make a perfect copy of the real plate and then affix that. How many cops would even notice? :-))

I won't rely on this for much driving.
