Default First gear woes and why I want a chip!

So I'm riding down El Camino in NorCal (Palo Alto) and go to pass a Volvo s60 (2.5T), and the guy speeds up to keep up with me. I smile and downshift to second, and blow right by him all the way though 3rd up to about 85. At the next light, he pulls up smiling, so I know it's on. My friend had looked at these cars, the 2.5T AWD trim runs a 2.5 liter turbo with 248hp, so I figured it would be funny to smoke him (the kid had probably just turned 18).

To make a long story short, I take off with no launch, but first gear feels pretty slow. Is this just me (without a launch) - it takes forever to get to 6500+. Anyway, he stay with me through first, 2nd I pull away, 3rd I was 10 car lenths ahead and he gave up. I was sort of disappointed it stayed with me even in first - I really want a chip now (I'm stock as a rock) . And yes, I am a decent rower.

Is that normal for first fear w/out a launch to feel sluggish? I've only had this car 2 weeks so I wasn't sure.

I think once APR releases the Direct Port, I'm getting that, the MTM Y and F pipe, 710N's, and a Milltek. And from there it begins .

First has always pulled hare for me, even when I was stock.

First is almost too short, even without a launch. Sounds like you need rowing lessons.

Default #1... it's 2.4T, not 2.5T +++ #2... That's normal, in my opinion

Wait till you find the first S60R, though. You won't be so lucky.

Default Yah I felt a drop in boost right around 4k, that's why I was asking...

I have a routine maintenance coming up, so I'll get it checked out for leaks and what not. The other day I did a launch on my own and it definitely went through first very quickly (hit the rev limiter), so maybe yesterday was a fluke.

Default That car only had about 200 hp...

You were racing a light-pressure turbo S60. If you were playing with a T5 (247hp) or R (300hp) you would have had an altogether different experience.

Thanks.

Default Not sure

It looked like the AWD to me (s47hp), in terms on the trim. He was running an automatic, that could have made the difference. I can't tell in 3rd if he gave up or I actually pulled that much on him, probably the former since he saw me pulling away in second (and we were going way more than twice the speed limit).

In any case, that was my first "race" in this car, at least I didn't lose .

Default With no launch, first pulls really slowly until you get boost, then it's a rocket.

2nd is where you make the pass though. I usually short-shift first, 'cause 2nd and 3rd are the smooth way to fly from low speed.
