My 2002 S4 is getting a Valentine's Day gift -- a short shifter. I have toiled over the archives [so no flames from the AudiWorld search function ***** out there] and am going to get the Tanoga, I think. . . . Here's what I "know" with questions thrown in where appropriate.
Andy H. likes it best; if it's good enough for Andy, then it's good enough for me.
There seems to be little dispute that the Tanoga is the "smoothest." If "smooth" means what I think it means (keep your minds out of the gutter -- OK, maybe keep 'em there just this once) then I'm all over that. But seriously, I take it that, for a short-shifter, being smooth is good and being anything but smooth is bad.
Next, I am a little concerned about reported problems when installing Tanoga's newest shifter into newer cars like mine. Some issue with 3rd and 4th, or something like that. Can someone elaborate on that? Is there some problem(s) with the Tanoga?
Also, I understand that shifting into reverse requires more effort. So?
Lastly, I have contacted Zev at Avalon and been quoted $275 for the shifter. How much to have it professionally installed? How hard, really, is the shifter to install myself? I've read the RS4.org write-up and {admittedly} am a bit intimidated. On a scale of 1 to 10, my mechanical aptitude is about a "5." I am, after all, an engineering school drop-out turned shark, er, I mean lawyer.
Anyways, comments will be appreciated. Even the smart-a$$ ones. OK, maybe not those so much. TIA.

action just right - you're going to want to do it yourself just so you know you can get it as smooth as possible regardless of how much time you spend on it.
I have the tanoga, and with the rs4.org instructions, the install is a breeze - I would rate myself as less-than mechanically qualified as well.

I have the "new" shifter and new Tanoga as well. No issues about the 3rd-4th shift either.
Installation isn't terribly difficult just have long extensions for the bolts and hex as well as the circlip plier.

Hi,
Permit me to post my experiance. The shifter is a great "first mod" as are springs. I did a Strat shifter which was easy to install and the instructions where very good. The Strats claim to fame is that it most closley resembles the physical layout of the stock shifter regarding having an angled pivit, etc... This is why it doesn't lay onto one side versus the others.
I set mine at the more conservative throw as its ~30% shorter and still feels great.
If you look into the Stratmosphere one, make sure to also buy a magnetic pickup and some extra grease. You'll see what I mean if you do the work.

I have a 2001.5 S4 and looking for SS also. I have done the same research as you did and chosen Tanoga.
I just wondering is there another version of Tanoga for the new version trans? Or they are just the same that causes the problem reported for the 3rd and 4th gear.
One extra I am aware of is that AWE has a bearing kit for the SS. Will that really make a different? Have anyone try it and what's the opinion?

....sometimes I hesitate to post my opinions about products because I'm afraid folks will purchase said product based solely on my opinion. I think you'll find the Tanoga to be an excellent product!
