First service at 5k miles, right? It's taking me a long time to get there - what about my oil?

I'm only at around 3k now, and I've had the car since May. Following the old "3 months/3000 miles" adage, I'm already due for a change. But since Audi says not to bring it in until 5k for it's first service, I'm wondering whether to swap out the oil now before that first service trip. It's going to take me probably until late Fall to hit 5k, and I'd hate to run the original oil that long if I don't have to. But, I've also heard that there are certain additives in the initial oil that is necessary for the first 5k miles. Help! I'm in Texas, if that matters (100+ every day), so recommend a grade as well if I should change it out.

Hey, Matt. Let the initial oil do its break-in thing, let those rings seat, and then at 5K you'll have fresh oil and be rarin' and ready to go.
Remember that, while it doesn't necessarily hurt a car to change the oil every 3 months/3,000 miles, that "adage" was invented by the oil industry to sell more motor oil. ;-) If you're going to go with synthetic oil, which I recommend, you can go way longer than 3/3K between changes. I have stuck to my MY2000's every-8K schedule.
I've used Mobil 1 5W-30 in my S4 since the first change, and it's performed perfectly in both the Texas winter and summer climates. (I am thinking of switching to the new Mobil 1 0W-40, though, as soon as I run out of my stash of 5W-30.)
Good luck!

What color is your S4? I live in Portland, and I've been spotting all the S4's (because I'm obsessed).

I got a letter telling me it was time for my 5K service. Since I have
embarrasingly less miles. I consulted the manual and it said 5K or
6 months whichever comes first with an exception for extreme conditions.
Since I bought the car in may I called the dealer and they said to wait until
November. Hope this helps.
