I changed my oil this weekend, so I decided to measure the thread reach from the nipple on my S4. Putting a thin (less than 1 mm thick) ruler across the gasket mounting surface of the oil cooler and measuring to the end of the threads with a depth gauge gave 2 cm of reach on my S4 ('02 model).
The M1-204 that I had handy has a significantly deeper thread reach due to the recessed baseplate on the filter itself versus the 078 115 561J Audi/VW filter, but measuring it from the surface of the gasket to the inside of the baseplate (end of the threads) gave 1 cm. Thus, with my particular S4 there is at least 1 cm of threaded nipple that will protrude up into the filter itself, past the baseplate. With a slightly compressed gasket, this cushion will be slightly greater. I can thus see no thread reach issues with my particular engine; but I have had my oil cooler replaced under warranty so I do not know if my previous oil cooler had less nipple protrusion (I like saying that) or if this measurement varies from car to car.
At least my filters will work on my car; YMMV. If you have to spin the filter several times from the point the threads connect until the gasket makes contact, you should be OK. I haven't had the chance to check the 2.8L 30V engine on my Passat yet. My guess is that some engines have less XS thread than others and this was the reason Mobil de-listed this application from their database. Just thought I'd share all the details for anyone as **** about this stuff as me. [Yeah, I know that most people will just use the OEM 078 115 561J filter and I only use that while I am under the original warranty - but the M1 filters are good. Stay away from Fram. The only filters I would use are OEM/Mann, Wix, or the M1 filters.] Happy oil changing in the future!

there are a handful of people waiting to get you. ;-P
This whole thing started because I was at Autozone last week and happened to look in the filter appl. book and saw no M1 filters listed for the S4, but I knew that they used to say the 204 was OK for the S4, so I called them and got this CYA BS about they no longer have any filters for any Audi products and I investigated. I'm cool with my "long nipple", others may want to adjust their stuff.
Good luck on the project Corrado!
