Front end clunking update, the H&R Coilover is blown

I took the Coilover out as suggested in my previous post. It felt tight, but since it was out I figured I should check the shock. I needed a tool to get the top nut off while holding the 6mm hex key, so went to Sears and picked up a Gear Wrench Pass-though socket set, it worked great!
I lowered to spring collers to release the tension, and removed the top nut. The shock shaft could be pulled up and down by hand, and has a bit of side play as well.
The question I have is should I remove the drivers side to check it? Is it okay to replace only one side.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?pid=00930036000&vertical=Sears& BV_UseBVCookie=Yes</a
