Fuel Guage shows "E" if gas is under 1/2 tank?
If the gas gets under 1/2 a tank, or between 1/2-1/4, it will fall the way to "E", bad floater?

Probably not. Broken/breaking wire, or dirty contacts. It is a really easy fix for an A4, but I don't know what model you have. There is a good writeup on it here:
