not to mention the FOD damage to your turbos. It almost seems like someone took your car to the beach and was fvcking around enough to get sand up in your engine bay. Maybe check to see if your air filter is seated properly and that you have no leaks past it. If you have access to a boroscope, check out your cylinders for grooves or gouges in the cylinder walls. It's going to be the only way to quell your paranoia that you actually sucked sand through your whole engine. Clean the injectors well and maybe get some new o-rings and a new fuel filter. Look around your engine bay at the small nooks and pockets to see if there is sand in those as well. I don't see how free sand could get that far down in the injectors, but I don't think there is anyway to definitely figure out what happened. Clean everything up the best you can and hope for the best!

however, engines can be surprisingly durable, if he's able to find the source of this sand and eliminate it, he might be ok.

i would suggest pulling the fuel filter first and see if there is sand in it, if there is, then you've got bigger issues.

I don't think sand would fit through the injector nozzles, though I could be wrong. I would start at the front of the car and work your way back checking everything you can with the resources you have. It's a judgment call, but I would take the injectors out a week or two later to see if any of that stuff is back. I really think that sand got there externally by the way it looks.

it might be crap from around the intake mani (looks like it was outside/above the rubber seal and got some on it when you puled it up) ,maybe from when you bough the motor (rs4 all together) wherever it sat..
another thing i'd do is pull the intake many and see how clean it is and around the valves.
you can post where are you are maybe some enthusiasts here can help you or guide you to a good shop.. you def do NOT wanna go back there.

in areas where they sand the roads during winter. The downside, is when removing the fuel rails, some of that could have fallen into the cylinders.
In the future, it would be best to use compressed air to blow out stuff before removing.
