Default General public opinion of S4 is interesting (long):

First off, this will be peppered with editorialization. Last night I was washing my car in my apt complex wash area. I pull it out in the street to do the wheels and let two young ladies pull in to wash their integra. This other guy pulls up in an explorer, parks, and waits to wash. As I'm finishing up and waiting to use the hose one last time, he comes up to me and our conversation goes like this:

Joe6er: Your car looks great, what year is it?

Me: Thanks, it's a 2000.

Joe: Nice.

He then comments on the bubble in my sidewall - My new tires will arrive tomorrow from Tirerack

Joe: I don't mean to insult you, but what exactly is the difference between this and, say...a Passat? I would hope it's a good deal for the price difference.

Me: Well, this has the engine from the A6 in it, it's a 2.7L with two turbos (I mention about the chip, and how it works). In addition, this has a stiffer suspension, and is generally more sports oriented.

Joe: So how many HP does it have? (ahh yes, the universal yardstick of performance)

Me: With the chip I should be a little over 300 (please don't flame, I'm only talking MTM claimed power here)

Joe: Oh, so that should almost be comparable to the W8 Passat then huh?

At this point I give up trying to convince him, he's clearly in the market for a Passat (he later told me this). The thing that gets me is that he's even somewhat informed: he referenced the newest C&D comparos with the Audis in them. Yet despite the fact that the S4 beat out the M3 in that article, he still didn't seem to understand. Oh well, no respect from Jon Q, but hey, he thinks it looks sharp!

Default you need to be an enthusiast to know what the S4 is...

from my experience not many people get 'it' at all. which is fine by me, i'll just smoke by them and let them think that it is one fast A4. ;-)

Default Did you ever notice that when you explain the chip...

...To people like this you get one of two responses:
1. Eyes glaze over and they couldn't care less
2. They think that is "neat" but can't understand why you get so excited over this stuff. A car is just a way to get to work. The more you explain, the worse it gets.

It is then that I quickly run inside to be consolded by AW.

Default Umm, technically, the A6 2.7t has the engine from the S4, not the other way around.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Audi first put the 2.7t on the S4 and then on the A6.

Default You should have told them that they are two different beasts, then given him a ride

which would have scared the **** out of him. Then told him to go drive a passat and he'll see the diff.

I kind of would like for people to know I'm not driving an A4, but oh well...

Default You could be right. My reasoning was that he might understand

that typically a bigger car (the A6) comes with a bigger engine...no sale anyway though.

Default Exactly! Granted, the money I paid was for the car itself. But why not

let it be known as the classy, performance machine that it is?
