Default Getting into second gear feels like more effort than it should... is that bad?

Since I've had my S4 (not long) second gear has always seemed kinda tough to get into... It goes in every time, no grinding, but it just feels really stiff and like I'm using more effort than I should have to to get it into second. All other gears are OK, it's just second gear, it seems wierd. Please don't tell me I have synchro problems....

Default You will have synchro problems if this goes on for long.

The wide gap between 1st and 2nd gear requires more synchronization than for the other gears. Make sure you really push that clutch pedal to the floor, and be patient. Don't try to rip from 1st to 2nd.

Default Thanks, will installing a short shifter help the feel of it at all?

It's something that I was planning on doing eventually, but after a long night of driving around I think I'm gonna be doing it sooner rather than later.

Colder temps can also cause the 1-2 shift to be more sluggish until the oil warms up.

Default With a short shifter, you get a shorter shift path ..... (m)

..... at the expense of greater force required to shift. The short shifter merely reduces the mechanical advantage of the shift lever by moving its fulcrum point. Nothing changes in the transmission.

If you bottom out the clutch pedal during the 1st to 2nd shift, and you still have to use excessive force after warm-up, your clutch actuator may need bleeding.

I like your zero tolerance ground clearance. :-)

Cheers,

Default Same thing for me.. Audi said it is within spec and nothing is wrong.....

I am hoping that a short-shifter fixes the problem but who knows .. I want to test drive another persons S4 (maybe not a 2000) and see if it drives the same .. I've learned HOW to drive the car with 2nd gear being the way it is, but I wish it was like butter instead.

Default My S4's taken lots of force to get into 2nd since day 1

And it was delivered with only 7 miles, so I'm pretty sure it's normal.
