Well, saving up for Stg3 is a good option with that money you're saving by having no payments 
You can do it in steps without any problems.
I'm fortunate that I can do the work myself, but if you go with a conservative straight-k04 setup you shouldn't have to pull them again.

51K... the "good" turbo had a fair amount of shaft play but nothing too serious
bad turbo had lots of shaft play -- compressor was rubbing on the intake and the turbine was chipped and missing a blade.

before I bought my S4 i checked out the E46 330ci and 2.0T A3...
the 2.0T was fun as hell but FWD I didn't want a 3.2
The E46 wasn't anything special IMO
the new e90 330 would be a different story as it has tons more power..
