Is it good to have an oil change after the break-in period? If it is, what kind of oil? Thanks

Default I would do so if I were you....(more)

Break-In period will leave more than normal metal dusts in the oil, and it will be better for the engine if oil is changed often during/just after break-in period.

Default Re: Leave it in till your first service. it's made for that

Read the FAQ under engine section.

In a nutshell, VW/Audi engines aren't like the "old" style engines where it made sense to change the oil after 600 - 1000 miles.

There needs to be some slight wear to properly seat the valves and rings..

some people who have changed too quickly are troubled by oil consumption problems later as the parts never seated properly.

The general plan I've heard is to go till your first service w/dino, then change to synthetic...

Default OK, read the FAQ (wrong) then read Audi's TSBs.

The faqs here have many factual errors and omissions, like oil weight (wrong) and oil coking TSB (omitted). The TSB encourages early changing. My dealer does too.

The only issue is to avoid delayed ring seating - a real concern - by leaving the break-in oil in long enough and then avoiding synthetic for - who knows - 8-10k?

Erics advice is consiustent with Audi's official advice, but given audi's history of early turbo failures, and given dino oil's decreasing flsh point with wear, I'm not comfortable and will do a dino change @4+k, then switch to synthetic after 10k

Default I waited until it looked dirty, about 3k miles. This is how I always handle the first change.

Default Does it really take 10k to seat the rings??

Changed to synthetic before then in my A4 2.8 with no problems of leaking or otherwise. Anyone know how long they're supposed to take to seat?

Default Depends - more

My mom's A6 auto - driven took almost 10k to seat (+ 5k lost to mobile 1 until the dealer pointed out the ewrror in my ways)

OTOH, my S4 seems to have stopped using any oil a few hunder miles ago (around 2000-2500), so maybe its done its seating.

I've heard dealer stories of cars that used oil for up to 15k. One owner on the quat list reported buying a 60k v-6 used which used oil. After one weekend att he track - voila - no more oil consumption :-) !!

Sooooo. YMMV

Default Funny, I couldn't find any TSB on the VW/Audi Tech site which mentiones early oil changes....

the only oil coking TSB I located (Group: 21; Number: 98-01) doesn't mention anything about oil changes. Can you point me to the exact TSB please?<p><a href="mailto:andy_hedin@hotmail.com"><img SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/A_Hedin_Sig.jpg" BORDER=0></a>
