I live in SoCal and work in Reno, NV. Two weeks ago I picked up my S4 at Peterson Audi in Boise, Idaho.
RUSTY BAPTIES [ PETERSON AUTOPLEX (208)378-9000 ] was a straight shooter from the beginning. No B.S., just M.S.R.P. and he'll order whatever you want, with a $500 non-refundable deposit. I've purchased several cars off dealer lots, but this important purchase was my first 'to order'. No false quick delivery promises, no run-around.
After my test drive in Reno, NV in March (they wanted MSRP+$3Gs, and don't even give out brochures to potential buyers...Good-Bye!) and lurking here for a month to gather information, I decided on my S4's options and went on a quest to find a dealer in the West who would order what I wanted and make me feel comfortable spending my money. I started in Sacramento and worked my way out to the Bay Area, Oregon, SoCal, Las Vegas and finally, BOISE, ID. I ordered my S4 on April 17 from Rusty.
BUILD DETAILS: My S4 is a thirtieth (30th) week build, completed 28 July, Delaware Port 5 August, AMTRAKed to WA State, trucked to Boise and delivered to me there on 1 September. The car was flawless. Of course, it should have been, but new car dealers are not always on the ball at delivery time. Not the case at Peterson. The purchase experience was memorable only because it was both effortless and flawless.
Trying to decide on alcantara or not? Do it!! NAV is great, too!

how long was the turnaround on your order. i want to order an s4, but don't wan to wait too long to get it. i have one coming in in a couple of months with everything i want except the sports package (the alcantera seats)...and i have a deposit down already. if i could order one and get it within 6-8 weeks, let me know.

If that dealer doesn't have exactly what you want in the pipeline...it will literally be 3.5 - 4 months minimum to get a "built-to-spec" S4. This is the case for all dealers. However, the only exceptions being:
1) Someone had ordered what you wanted, exactly, and now backs out of the deal for one of many reasons (financing fell through, got another car, got an S4 from another dealer instead, etc.)
2) If it is in the computer, but still can be changed, BEFORE being built. This may reduce the wait time to 3 months...maybe 3.5 months.
Remember it takes about 1 month to come over on the ship...about 2-3 weeks to get inspected at the dock, get off loaded, and then get on a transport and delivered to your dealership. It also take X days on the production line itself (this is the part I don't know) AND...dealers can only order new cars once per month...but they can change them if they haven't reached this one step in the production process.
