I think Steve was TOO close to it and they captured the internal drama of a race a little TOO realistically. Most of the action is subtle stuff that happens on the track. I have to admit that quite a bit of the end didn't make sense to me all these years until I started participating in endurance races...then it was like AHA!
But that is a common critisizm, you have to be so enraptured with the cars, the sound and the racing that the fact there IS little else is of no consequence.
