Default Green coolant temp sensor - failure possible after only 1 year?

I had this updated to the "new" green version last year and 6K miles ago. but I still got the following code pop up a couple of times at highway speed and moderate throttle. STFA it appears this used to be $5 part, now $20-25.

Default Where did you purchase it?

I got one from PureMS and it failed in a few months. I posted about it and someone else reported a similar experience...

I just replaced with the Myler unit. Got it for $14 from the local autoparts place.

Default is that right? maybe it's a bad batch? only thing I've noticed is that my coolant temp

reads a bit lower than normal but I attributed it to winter and short drives.

Then, temp sensor or thermostat is toast. Use your VAG to determine which.

Send it back. 1 year warranty, we'll replace it, just cover shipping.

The thermostat controls the coolant temperature. The coolant temprature sender only measures it.
