I thought it was just me because I live in NJ where you don't pump your own gas, so when I was down in the southern states I was having trouble getting the gas to automatically fill up.. But today the gas attendant couldn't get more than five bucks worth of gas in without it quitting on him .. Is this fumes? .. does that make sense? .. too much pressure in the tank? .. any way around this common problem I am having?

It normally helps. Careful when you do it, you dont want to bend in your rear quarter panel. Best to do it near the edge of the trunk. Push down and rock it a bit, and most of the air comes out.

they had to replace the tank and filler pipe because it was blocked with something.
If you are using one of those gas pumps with the plastic fume catcher it might be causing it...
pull it back some.

could never get a full tank...car would show almost empty, I'd fill it till it wouldn't take any more, and it would still be a 1/4 tank short. Turns out to be a faulty fuel level sender that I had replaced under warranty.
Sounds like it's what you could have - you might have more in the tank than you think.
