Default Point #2 would absolutely be valid...but only if the car is not moving...

When the car is moving, then the air will be moving also. CPU's tend to not move too much.

Default Amazing!! The manufacturer's own test results show that their product works!!

I see few potential problems where it wouldn't work as well as claimed if:

1) contact surface area between the filter and the heatsink isn't large and good. It could actually work as a blanket if the contact isn't good.

2) If there's little air flow around the filter, it doesn't do a lick of good. Plus the air flow over the fins would have to be in a good direction.

It gets HOT. Ever try to remove the filter on a non-cold car?

Not the manufacturer, they just sell the part.

Default Airflow is an issue for sure. The plastic cover does have vents though, and then

you do have air from the side grills getting through there. I'm not sure how much actually flows around, near, etc. the filter. I think the bottom line is that someone needs to try it and do some logging.

But it could work in the right environment.

How is the contact area between the filter and the heatsink not large?

Default Re: How is the contact area between the filter and the heatsink not large?

I wasn't saying that the contact surface isn't large. What I was trying to convey is that good contact area is critical.

I was picturing the side profile of the filter not being flat in order to mate up with the sink well. I was also picturing any little dirt creating a short gap, but creating a significant pocket of non-contacting surface area.

Either way, even if it works well, I can't imagine it being an oil cooler that makes a significant difference when compared to the heat our engine makes. On the other hand, I can't imagine it harming our engine either even if it acts as an insulator.

Default Yeah, I agree. You could always put some thermal paste between the heatsink and the cooler ; )

I couldn't see it dropping temps more than a few degrees though.
