Heh-heh-heh...threw out my fishing rod, hooked an M3 and reeled it in this morning.

I was on my way to work this morning. I passed an E46 M3 shortly after getting on the freeway. The M3 tucked in behind me in the left lane pretty close to my bumper shortly thereafter. When I moved to the right to pass a couple slow cars in the left lane, I mashed the throttle in 6th gear to see if the M3 gave chase behind me. Sure enough the M3 did.
Now, I figure that at about 3000-3500rpm in 6th gear my S4 still puts out a little over 250hp even at those low RPM, so a throttle mash does result in dramatic acceleration. I'm sure the M3 felt I was going as fast as I could and that he was going to show me his power when he could.
Back to the story -- I had lifted a little bit. Then we had cleared the left lane traffic but I did not change lanes into it. After about one second, the M3 did though, nailing the throttle at the same time and beginning to pass me on the left. I waited another second for the M3 to get even next door to me (going about 8-10mph faster than me by now), grabbed 4th gear (we were doing about 80), and floored it. Of course, I had to be careful not to spill my full latte (I only have the spill-resistant lid, not the spill-proof lid). The M3 never even opened a gap of a full car length between us. Within a few seconds and by 100mph I had outaccelerated the M3 and I was closing what small gap there was, and within another couple seconds at around 115-120mph, I passed the M3 in earnest, but had to quickly change lanes to the right to avoid traffic we were both catching. The M3 followed me still at a high velocity, as I'm sure it wanted another run at it (with me in his blind spot, etc., I don't think he realized he was on my fishing line all that time) but as I kept moving over to the right for my exit, he wasn't going that route.
Quite a shame we didn't have bit more road together, because I'm sure a tangle where we both hit the throttle at the same time would have been quite the unexpected and extremely crushing defeat for the M3. =)
Otherwise, it's been a really long time since I've found any cars out there to play with (well, all I seem to do is commute around rush hour these days). Certainly I haven't found any since either adding the AWE fueling kit or the RS4 intercoolers.

...besides, it wouldn't have affected the outcome, only made it all take a half second less.
