Default Homelink question - do you have to press the "learn" button on the opener itself?

My roomate and I just moved into a new place with underground parking, but we only got one remote for the gate. I have no idea if we have access to the opener. Is it possible to program the Homelink without pressing that learn button? Why can't the Homelink just duplicated the remote?

Default Some openers have rolling codes, and require something to be set on the opener itself...

in order for the remote to learn. Genie openers are like this. Was unable to program the Homelink without setting the switches on the opener itself.
