How can I determine what ECU box an S4 has before I buy it??

Any way to do this other than pulling the ECU out??

You can hook up VAG-COM and read the ECU #.

Also, if you know the model year, you should be able to tell with reasonable certainty...

For 6-speeds:
2000 - A-box
2001 - H-box (old badge)
2001.5 - M-box (new badge)
2002 - T-box

I don't know about the triptronic ECU lettering.

you can just pop the housing open and read the letters on the ecu sticker, OR you can read the build

date in the ds door sill.

What are the build dates for 2001.5?

The answers posted to the OP's question don't answer his question.

A 2001.5 S4 isn't built on July 1st, 2001. What WERE the build dates for those cars? Late 2000? What?
