I went thru the same thing, learned the hard way. Now I use a cheap set of flik justice wheels finished in black. I think even new they were $89 each. A little black rustoleum cleans em up nice now!

I didn't think it would be a problem, but next time I'll just run my track wheels/tires regardless, or at least switch out the Hawk Blues!
Oh, and we're not talking about a thin film, either. In some spots, the caked pad is three-dimensional. I would think that a clay bar would pick up too much grime to be useful after a few inches. I can finish with clay bar, but I need something to loosen the dust so that I can scrub it away.

There are better compounds with almost the same amound of initial bite that have a fraction of the dusting. Using Blues in the rain is the kiss of death.
Cobalt VR spec is the hot pad now in BMW club racing. Very linear and it only works better and better with heat. I don't know if there are Audi sizes. I've also heard big things about the Hawk HT10 and HT14 and they're surely available for Audis.
Unfortunately your wheels are toast. At this point focus on the body panels.

Toast? The stuff comes off if I scrub at it, so I don't think they're a loss. I just want to find out if there's a product that makes the job easier.

I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, so forgive me if I'm missing something here. You said, "Very linear and it only works better and better with heat." If they work better and better with heat, wouldn't that be non-linear?

It may take a few applications, but this stuff is generally pretty good at dissolving brake dust. I would remove the wheels from the car, and give them a thorough cleaning with this stuff. Follow the instructions, and rinse thoroughly after each application!
