Default How to differentiate between loose steering rack and failing control arms/TRE's...

when the car is on lift and I try moving the wheels with my hands? In other words, what to look for?

Symptoms - I get an audible "thunk" when turning the car into a parking lot. Sometimes I can feel it in the steering wheel and through the chassis. Doesn't happen all of the time. Seems more pronounced with more aggressive weight shifts. This would suggest a loose steering rack, right (can't those bolts come loose on that thing behind the battery?).

I do also get some rattling over potholes...which might suggest control arms or tie-rod ends. Trying to find an easy way to differentiate. I've not been confident with my visual appraisal of the control arm movement. THey seem pretty solid and no torn boots.

Default You could do what I did....and replace it ALL (rack, all control arms, TREs)

That hurt.

$728 from dealer. New, not refurbed. The shop (shine racing) said the refurbs are CRAP

Yikes. Was that just parts or labor too?

Default Part only...and I have heard up to $1100 for the part. Labor is a bear, but since I already

had the engine out, it wasn't nearly as timeconsuming.

No Doubt, it's a big job.

Wow. Well thanks much for the info. May I ask - how did you know the rack was shot?

Default I was told by a dealer when a cv boot was being replaced...2+ years ago. But mine never "failed"

When my local shop said it looks like a needed a new one while replacing another CV boot, I decided to do it since the tranny/engine were coming out.

Insist on a new one if you do it...I'd also find a shop that would let you shop around for the part and have a low $hop rate.

Default when you move the wheel, look at the TRE, if it moves up and down its more than

likely the bolt, if it moves side to side, its a bad TRE... thats what i was told...
