I rebuilt my d/v's today and took cole's advice and used suspension fluid. It makes a lot of sense. Suspension fluid actually swells up the seals of s shock. I dont see how that would not help an oring type d/v. A piston type d/v would also take advantage of it due to the suspension fluids high heat tolerance.
Important!!!
It's important not to mix up the parts with the other d/v notice how i have everything layed out. keep each D/v separate. mixmatching the pistons can possibly lead to leaks
what you will need:
1.Carb/choke cleaner(less harmful on rubber then brake cleaner)
2. Teflon tape(for screw on top type d/v like the 007)
3.Fork/shock fluid (or any high temp grease)
I used the same type of oil that penske/axis uses in there shocks, race tech(made in switzerland)
4.clean rags
5. replacement O rings if needed.
step one
disassemble d/v
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03489.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03489.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step two
if you have a piston sealed by O rings take your nail and stick it into the backside of the o ring and begin to spin the d/v until it comes out of its groove.
It's important not to try and pry out the O ring with your nail in one place. you could possibly damage a reuseable O ring.
step three
Clean all parts with Carb/choke cleaner. spray all the parts with the cleaner at first then spray on a rag and wipe all parts down until no dirt is left.(you may need a small flathead screwdriver to lightly scrape up any old grease)
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03490.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03490.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step four
visually inspect the piston for any scratches indentations which would not allow it to seal properly. If you find any major scratches on the piston wall, you may need to replace the part.
In my case, I tested both my d/v's before i cleaned them. the one was leaking and would not stay open. If you notice in the first picture below. The wear area of the piston is LESS then the other d/v which is another sign it ws not operating properly. This can lead to overboost issues(which i had).
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03493.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03493.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
notice how in this pic the wear area is larger then the picture above.
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03494.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03494.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step 5
Once all parts are clean and ready to be reassembled. Pour a portion of suspension fluid onto a plate and allow the O rings to soak in the fluid for a couple minutes.
If you are using grease, grease up the entire o ring.
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03496.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03496.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step 6
With your finger take a dab of suspension fluid or grease and rub it onto the outer part of the piston everywhere as well as the area i am holding in the picture(that seals as well)
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03497.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03497.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step 6
take another dab of suspension oil or grease with your finger and rub it onto the inner wall of the d/v body(where the piston slides up and down)
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03498.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03498.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step 7
take another dab of fluid or grease and rub it around the O rins on top edge of the d/v body. Im not sure of other d/v setups but i would think there is some sort of seal there as well.
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03499.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03499.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step 8
If your d/v is threaded like the 007 wrap it with teflon. the way you put the teflon on should be closkwise(the same way you twist on the top d/v cap) this is so you do not kink the teflon tape.
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03500.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03500.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step 9
take one more dab of fluid or grease and rub it onto the top inner half of the d/v
and for good measure if your using a fluid like lubrication you may want to pour a slight amount of lube in between the piston and d/v inner wall(so there is extra lubrication in there)
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03505.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03505.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
step 10
With some care place the D/v piston back into the d/v body, you may want to wiggle it slightly to allow the piston to slip past the O rings. If its a ring type piston setup collapse the ring with your finger and push in.
screw on or tighten the bolts to join together the d/v halves.
step 11
test your newly rebuilt D/V
with eraser side of the pencil push in the piston and hold the small vacuum inlet with your finger.
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03502.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03502.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Look on the bottom larger inlet and make sure the piston stays open. Its ok if the piston moves slightly when you stop pressing the piston up with the pencil. as long as it holds it open without shutting after a while your good to go!!
this is holding the small vacuum inlet
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03503.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03503.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
this is after letting go of the vacuum inlet
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03504.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03504.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
all done!!
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03506.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03506.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
reinstall and rest easy knowing your d/v's are fully functional again. I would say service interval of say 10k? not really sure on this.
just make sure you fully seat all hoses onto the d/v's. If you do the d/v install right you will be able to use your cover again as long as you install them normal(not in reverse)
the pic below is the normal way to install them. it really doesnt make a difference
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03508.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03508.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
woot!!
<a href="http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/?action=view¤t=DSC03509.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/beerock69/me%20pics/car/diverter%20how%20to/DSC03509.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
