Default How do I check tranny fluid level?

I don't want to change the fluid, I just need to check the level, and make sure I am checking the right one. I have been experiencing grinding into second and had read once before on here to make sure the fluid level was up.
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!

Default Doubtful the fluid level is causing your grinding, but if

you still want to check you have to remove the screw from the fill hole. Spec says fluid should be approx 1/4 inch below fill hole.

the fluid level is low, so I am hoping that is the problem.

Default Go to AutoZone or similar a get the right tool. It's not that expensive

about 15 bucks. Works like a big syringe...suck the oil out of the can and expels it into the hole.

Default nothing to do with the oil level

your second gear syncho carrier is
failing and so is the synchro
very common on 6 speed trannys

Default Thanks for the input ------->

but I hope your wrong for my sake. The car only has 14,000 miles on it. I used to have an '86 GTi, that had a slow tranny leak, and it would do the same thing....but when i filled it it fixed it till it ran down again.
At any rate I appreciate the info, and it sounds like I will have to dig deeper for a solution.

Default i hope so too

but there is very big difference
from the old trannys and a 6 speed
s4
but still hope it works for you
to check the level there is a plug
on the driver's side by the axle flange
(17 mm allen) the level must be 10mm
below the opening with the car sitting
in a level surface
good luck
