Default How do I remove the freakin ashtray? .. [m]

I've searched and searched and (as always) there are a placenta of conflicting answers. One says just pull it out, one says remove radio and hvac controls and some screws.

I have the usual problem of a bunch of crap jammed underneath it and it won't open w/o removing the shifter boot and applying force. I also spilled about 15 route 44's and a few large frosty's in there so its a bit gummmed up.. the ants don't help either...

but anyway..how the hell to remove it?!

And.. I'm too cheap to buy those radio tools what do you suggest I use instead?

Default Yeah.. i was just there. Thanks... but...

His link to his tool is 404 http://potato.smashedhat.com/pattjin/audi/stereo.html

I think someoen said to use their nail file, but I don't have one..i just bite my nails !

I think don recommends hax saw blades but i dont have those either and it seems like a lot of trouble to remove the teeth?

Before I remove all that I was hoping to get a definitive answer whether it is required or not?

Thanks

Default you can unscrew your shift **** and pull up on the plastic piece that surrounds the shift base...

It is only attached on one end. The end by the E brake lever. It is the piece of plastic that holds in the shift boot. Just take off the ****, push your fingers down on the boot (between the shift lever and the trim ring) and pull up. The 2 clips will pop up and the thing pulls right out. Giving you full access to the ash tray.

Default To the right of the write up is a picture, looks like if you have some scrap brass molding, you can

make them <IMG SRC="http://potato.smashedhat.com/pattjin/audi/images/tools-high.jpg">

Default lol.. take care of your S4 better...

basically its a damn PITA. You need to remove the stereo then remove the HVAC controls and there are some screws UNDER the HVAC controls to remove then it will slide right out. Getting the stereo out is no big deal if you have the tools, but the HVAC is a really pain. goodluck
